Epic Targaryen legends that belong on the big screen

Valar Morghulis…
Rytsas! In this blog, we'll talk about George Martin's vast and still unexplored world, dragons, the brutal and fascinating events within royal families, and the upcoming new shows.
Let’s start with the latest news.
🐉 The series "House of the Dragon," which is a prequel to "Game of Thrones" (GOT), has not only taken us back to the unique world of GOT but also brought new life to the story of the Targaryen family. This series takes us to a time when the Targaryens still ruled Westeros with the power of their dragons. "House of the Dragon" shows how the internal struggles within the family turned into the "Dance of the Dragons," a civil war that threatened their entire rule.
The show introduces new characters, dramatic events, and unexpected betrayals, revealing the dark corners of the Targaryen family’s history. And while we all wait for the further developments in this series, George Martin recently revealed that other new "Game of Thrones" spin-offs are already in the works, with seven currently in development. These include three live-action series and four animated ones. These projects are in various stages, and it’s unclear if all of them will make it to the screen.
However, this news makes us wonder which stories could make it to the big screen… or which ones we would like to see begin filming. We’re sure you also have some interesting ideas, so let’s think together about what exciting scenarios could be developed for these new spin-offs.
👉 The Doom of Valyria
George Martin rarely gives details about the Doom of Valyria, but it's clear that it was a massive event. The book "Dance of the Dragons" mentions that this powerful empire was destroyed in a single day when "volcanoes spewed smoke, ash, and fire, which even the dragons flying in the sky could not escape." If this story were made into a series, it could show us the tragic causes that led to Valyria's downfall and add new dimensions to Martin's world.
👉 The Story of Daemon Blackfyre: One Family, Two Fates
The Targaryen family gave Westeros many leaders, but some of them should never have been near the throne. Mad Aerys and Aegon IV, the latter known as "the Unworthy," were among those. Aegon was known for his erratic behavior and the large number of mistresses, many of whom had his children. Before his death, the king legitimized these children, leading to disputes over inheritance.
The Targaryen family has never been without its problems, and the recognition of illegitimate children made things even more complicated this time. Daeron Targaryen, the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, was known for his peaceful nature and preference for solving conflicts diplomatically. But the situation becomes even more tense when Daemon Blackfyre, Aegon’s illegitimate but much more charismatic and influential son, appears.
Being a skilled warrior and a true knight, Daemon couldn’t accept the denial of his rights. When he was 12, Aegon gave him the Targaryen family sword, Blackfyre, symbolizing his great destiny. After Aegon's death, Daemon claimed his right to the throne, and of course, there were those in the court who supported him. His rebellion was quickly suppressed, but its impact continued to haunt the history of the Targaryen family for many years.
Doesn’t the Blackfyre Rebellion seem like history repeating itself? Once again, there’s a struggle between two branches of the Targaryen family, palace divisions, and two candidates, each with their own truth. The one difference—this time, there are no dragons, as they had already disappeared by then.
👉 Robert’s Rebellion
Robert’s Rebellion is one of the events that many would love to see on screen. This story includes the romantic episode between Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, which led to a civil war.
The legend says that Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna, which made the Mad King order the execution of the Stark family members and eventually sparked the rebellion.
We know how this war started and ended, but many fans want to learn more about Rhaegar and Lyanna’s story, as well as what Ned Stark saw inside the Tower of Joy, how Jaime Lannister earned the nickname "Kingslayer," and how Princess Daenerys was born during a stormy night. This storyline will undoubtedly continue to intrigue "Game of Thrones" fans.
👉 Arya Stark’s Future
After the finale of "Game of Thrones," Arya Stark’s future remains open and intriguing. While the rest of her family is occupied with their thrones and ruling, Arya decides to explore the unknown lands to the west. This mystery is what makes us curious about what new adventures might await Arya.
But here come the "buts." HBO is currently not interested in exploring events after the finale of "Game of Thrones"—all the new spin-offs in development are set in the past of Martin’s world. The only exception was "Snow," a series about Jon Snow’s new adventures, but this project was put on hold. Although Arya’s future seems richer and more interesting in the long run than what awaits Jon Snow beyond the Wall, it might not be enough. The second argument is the "Sea Snake" series already in production, which is very similar to Arya’s story in style (sea voyages, distant lands, exotic wonders). And third, the production costs—if the budget for "Sea Snake" can still be reduced by turning it into an animated series, fans might not accept such a move with Arya.
👉 The Faceless Men
Another important part of Arya’s life was her encounter with Jaqen H'ghar, a member of the Faceless Men, an organization of assassins who can change their appearance and kill anyone in the world for the right price.
A series about the activities of a medieval assassin organization, where the hero changes his appearance in each episode and finds a new way to reach his target, would refresh Martin’s world. On the other hand, the audience might not accept a hero who changes his face every episode, and despite the ambiguity of the world of "A Song of Ice and Fire," hired killers are still negative characters who are often difficult to empathize with.
No matter how much we think or dream, the fact is that the following spin-offs are currently in development or production: "House of the Dragon," "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," "Aegon’s Conquest," "Sea Snake," and "Ten Thousand Ships." All we can do is wait for news and hope that our favorite stories will soon be brought to the screen.
And as they say, Valar Dohaeris…
